Title design for a Netflix dystopian drama

Leila, Netflix's adaptation of Prayaag Akbar's dystopian novel, directed by Deepa Mehta, imagines an authoritarian Aryavarta. We designed the title sequence to introduce its oppressive world, using stark symbols and metaphors that foreshadow the story's unsettling themes.

Leila is a dystopian drama series based on Prayaag Akbar's novel and directed by Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman, and Pawan Kumar. It follows Shalini (played by Huma Qureshi) in a future society where segregation, purity laws, and authoritarian rules dominate. Her daughter Leila goes missing, prompting Shalini to embark on a dangerous journey through a regime that has deeply eroded civil freedoms and human dignity. The series premiered on Netflix in 2019 and quickly sparked strong reactions for its bold thematic content and parallels to contemporary societal issues. To set the tone of this harsh and unsettling world, the title design needed to do more than introduce the name of the show. It introduces key visual elements that reflect oppression and control—walls, typography that feels confined, stark textures, and a palette that combines cold tones with moments of harsh contrast. The titles serve as an entry point into the feeling of suffocation, surveillance, and longing that defines the show. The design was developed in partnership with the creative team and is produced in alignment with Netflix's original content standards. It presents motifs from the narrative as symbols—barriers, purity tests, shadows—and shapes that feel both architectural and symbolic. The sequence primes the audience with visual metaphors before the plot begins, creating a bridge between the novel's themes and the screen's narrative urgency.
