We designed an environmental graphics and wayfinding system for KMCC's Mother & Child Specialty Hospital in Tirupur, weaving a children's storybook narrative into the hospital's architecture to create comfort and delight.
For KMCC's Mother and Child Specialty Hospital in Tirupur, we developed a comprehensive environmental graphics and wayfinding system in close collaboration with Shanmugam Associates (Santhosh Shanmugam & Ramya Raman). The design sought to complement the architectural intent while creating a warm, child-friendly atmosphere that could comfort patients and families. At the heart of the project is a storybook narrative inspired by the region's landscapes, folklore, and everyday life. The story follows a curious caterpillar on its journey of discovery — from fields to forests and finally into the city. Along the way, the caterpillar encounters creatures of all kinds, each contributing to its adventure and growth. This gentle narrative became the foundation for the graphic system, bringing imagination and familiarity into the hospital environment. The story was carefully mapped across the building's floors, with active spaces such as corridors, waiting areas, and reception zones designed as picture-book frames, filled with vibrant, engaging scenes. In contrast, more passive spaces like patient rooms were treated with softer background landscapes, creating a calming and reassuring environment. This balance ensured that the graphics were not only visually engaging but also emotionally supportive. In addition to the environmental graphics, a printed version of the storybook was designed, allowing children to engage with the narrative beyond the walls of the hospital. Illustrations by Rohan Francis and Namya Gupta beautifully brought the caterpillar's world to life, blending playfulness with warmth. Together, these elements created a cohesive system where storytelling, design, and architecture worked hand in hand to shape a space of care and comfort.
